Legal or Lawyer Advertisements

In the United States, although the advertising of the services being offered by law professionals or attorneys at law is typically permitted, attorney advertising is strictly regulated by bar association rules and the state court.

Advertisements for law firms and attorneys may take various forms such as the ads in yellow pages, radio ads, television commercials, brochures, posters, and bill boards. Nowadays, attorney advertising can also be done by means of online advertising. Lawyers who specialize in tort cases such as medical malpractice, product liability, personal injury and negligence are the ones who typically use advertisements. However, lawyers in other areas of the practice of law such as criminal defense attorneys as well as lawyers who specialize in property law, family law and bankruptcy also take advantage of legal advertising. Although print, television and radio advertising still remains the most used and prominent form of attorney advertisement, a new form of legal advertising has emerged. It is the use of the internet to promote a lawyer or a law firm’s website through emails, banners and search engine optimization.

Up to these days, individual bar associations continue to regulate and restrict attorney advertisements. For example, in New York, print advertisements are only allowed to contain the phone numbers and the address of the firm. In Florida on the other hand, audio advertisements must use only a single voice when information is articulated and the only audio background allowed is instrumental music.
